1. Anonymous asked: Do you worry about the inconsistency of Ron Paul's message? Mainly that if it is unethical to initiate force and threats of violence abroad then how the f*$& does he think it's okay to force me to pay ANY tax for ANYTHING?

See my previous response to a similar question.

And here is Ron Paul giving props to Lysander Spooner.

All of us are walking contradictions. The inconsistency that the best philosophers may lack in their ideology, they make up for in their lifestyle. And the few who might be blameless in both thought and deed? Well, good luck in finding them. If you do, show me how successful they are in persuading others to follow their example. The diffusion of new ideas and values is dependent upon relationship, and relationship requires engagement. To engage the statist world without partaking in it to some degree is nearly impossible.

History shows that lasting social change occurs in incremental steps, while the most rapid and drastic changes have usually resulted in either worse or fleeting conditions. So to be preoccupied with esoteric matters or obsessed with finding fault in figures like Ron Paul who happen to be the most visible and successful proponents of peace and freedom is energy that could be better expended elsewhere.

Does this mean that radical activism is useless? Not necessarily, but we must admit that our belief in spontaneous order must invariably apply to our activism. In other words, if order cannot be perfectly planned then neither can revolution. Therefore, dogmatism on methods and strategy is unproductive. It is great to feel confident in one’s own tactics, but one’s self-confidence mustn’t become a universal measuring stick for everyone else. We all must take ownership of our impact on others, directly and indirectly, but condemning others who fall short of our expectations and abilities undermines the solidarity and fraternity vital in effectively changing the world.

  4. My high point today …

was annihilating the pro-war, interventionist political views of a PhD-holding V.P. of a large public university and multi-decade military veteran during an impromptu debate deep within the bowels of my state Capitol. Despite the righteous indignation percolating inside me the entire time, I managed to do it all with a smile, and to his credit he graciously conceded to my rebuttals without taking offense. If only peace-mongering was this successful and pleasant every time, eh?

Can I get a little love for spreading some love??!!  :)

  5. Anybody who tries to change society without examining the family, is trying to push a shadow without moving a statue.

  6. The ancient Israelites remind libertarians that the state can dominate us in two ways: it can become our God or our Devil. We are in the state’s power both when we see it as the source of all good and when we see it as the source of all evil.

To fight the state, I think, we must transcend our obsession with the state. We must fill our lives with non-political loves, joys, projects and excellences. When the state is wicked, we must pay it little heed. Yes, we must do justice. Yes, we must seek limited government, if not the abolition of the state. But our lives must be a witness to freedom: we must live if the state were nothing, or at best, an annoyance.

Billy Corgan interview with Alex Jones

This was amazing. It was exactly what Alex needed after all these years. Mad respect to Billy Corgan.

Billy shows a lot of class, grace, and patience in his delicate criticism of Alex. Alex keeps interrupting him, but finally at the end Billy gets to fully convey his advice to Alex.

  8. Murray Rothbard’s Practical Politics by Jack Hunter

While sometimes I just want to join a libertarian/anarchist commune somewhere and kiss our sick mainstream society good bye, Jack Hunter’s work serves as an effective reminder that while private activism is vital for social change, public activism (i.e. political activism) cannot be entirely ignored.

  13. Clearing Up Caricatures of Libertarians

  14. I share this fascinating essay for several reasons. As someone who is irreligious, I nevertheless recognize the need for the liberty movement to build coalitions across boundaries, religious and otherwise. Every great movement in history was able to penetrate social divisions with a simplistic core message that was intelligible and applicable to people of varying backgrounds, classes, cultures, vernaculars, languages, beliefs, education levels, etc. Those of us who are working to reduce the power of the state recognize the sizable atheist community within our movement and the understandable connection that some make between self-ownership and the rejection of all authority, earthly and divine alike. However, the atheist community needs to be willing to put aside their irreligious sentiments if by doing so enlarges the audience of the liberty message. In the end, what do atheist libertarians/anarchists care most about, beliefs about the afterlife or ethical and political values? My point is that the Christian religion, while considered superfluous to many, contains many overtly peaceful and anti-authoritarian themes that can be used to “convert” Christians to our political cause. We can’t get caught up belittling things that might be useful tools in adding to our numbers while improving the world. This essay is one person’s attempt at highlighting the many libertarian and anarchist themes in the narrative of Jesus and of the early Christian church as recorded in the New Testament. I encourage all freedom-lovers to give this a read and to forward to their fellow Christian statists.
